. . .I’ve been in “the academy” since I arrived as a freshman at Princeton in 1977.  It’s more than forty years now, & in that time I’ve come to see how big a swindle most of the college system in the United States has become, how far removed from reality, the common good, the intellectual life, & the development of moral citizens out of the raw young stuff of passions & folly. . .

Civil War III?

. . .the Left has long adopted the tactics of shouting down adversaries & engaging in street thuggery.  Not all Leftists approve of such tactics, but, as perusing almost any Leftist website demonstrates, Leftist activists cheer on these measures.  Now the Left has taken to hounding administration officials, usually women, in public places & at their homes. . .

‘I Want Vengeance,’ Said The Christian-Hater

. . .Maddux: It’s reached a point for me where I am actually Happy when someone who is Christian or Republican Suffers.  I didn’t use to be like that.  But in the age of Trump, it is what it is.  I really can no longer empathize.  I just realized that if Rod got cancer tomorrow & passed, the dominant emotion I would feel would be happiness.  Is this healthy? Probably not.  But it is what it is, in the age of Trump.  I wish you guys nothing but ill-will & when the Democrats control the levers of power again, I don’t want balance restored.  I want vengeance for all the things you guys did while in power. . .

Keeping Anti-Catholics Off-Balance

. . .[a] statement that could be regarded as misogynistic, anti-Semitic, or homophobic would haunt a speaker for years, & could conceivably destroy a public career.  Yet there is one massive exception to this rule, namely, that it is still possible to make quite remarkably hostile or vituperative public statements about one major religious tradition, namely, Catholicism, & those comments will do no harm to the speaker’s reputation. . .

5 Books that Walked Me Back to the Faith

. . .Crossing the Tiber.  Journey Home.  Coming Home.  However you label that decision to go all in on Catholicism, the process is never without heartbreak & loss.  After falling in love with my non-Catholic husband & subsequently falling away from my Catholic roots, we spent 17 years roaming the Protestant landscape.  My everyday life friends were also deeply steeped in our schooling & faith community.  Therefore, when we left that faith tradition, we inevitably had to leave behind some sweet relationships that just did not survive the departure. . .

If ‘Everybody Knew’ about Cardinal McCarrick, the Corruption Runs Deep

. . .now, at last, we know, too, that complaints had been lodged against the cardinal.  These complaints, we are told, did not involve minors—& that’s all we are told about the complaints, apart from the fact that they were settled.  But in light of those complaints, & in light of the many stories involving seminarians, it would be naïve to suggest that the cardinal has now been brought to disgrace because of a single, isolated incident.  The seminarians may have been of legal age, but they were not a bishop’s equals.  His position gave McCarrick the opportunity to recruit young men & to silence those who rejected his advances, & he abused a sacred trust. . .
