A Relic of the 1965 Liturgy

. . .that strange Mass produced by the Council in 1965, an interim liturgy somewhere between the Usus Antiquior & the Novus Ordo, was often accompanied by a distinctive style – at once traditional & fresh, what has been called by some “The Other Modern”. . .

Plato’s Aristocracy & Why Catholics are Losing the Culture War

. . .whether you like it or not, we in the West have a layered class system & our inability to see it & plan accordingly has led contemporary Catholics to lose our cultural impact on the global stage.  Before we get to the reasons why let’s look at the classical Greek & Indo-European idea of society & rank & then move on to how Catholics are losing their social & political influence. . .

Screen Shot of Timothy Cardinal Dolan (Credit: deaconcast.com)

Make Catholicism Weird Again

. . .the Catholic response to the Met Gala itself, which consisted of an institutional blessing for the spectacle — not just Timothy Cardinal Dolan opening the museum exhibit, but the Sistine Chapel Choir performing for the swells & starlets in the evening — followed by an angry Catholic social-media backlash against the evening’s various impieties.  When a living faith gets treated like a museum piece, it’s hard for its adherents to know whether to treat the moment as an opportunity for outreach or for outrage. . .

On an Illiberal Education

. . .The Wall Street Journal editorial (April 20) commented on Reed College’s capitulation to student “bullies,” as it called them:  “This (campus protest) is about blocking the study of core texts of Western Civilization.  That Reed College would agree to this, and, especially under political pressure, is an insult to the meaning of a liberal arts degree”. . .
