Humanæ Vitæ: The Reason My Wife & I Returned to the Church

. . .when I recently read about the new assault within the Church on Pope Blessed Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical on contraception, I was deeply disturbed.  Humanae Vitae told the truth about contraception & all its negative impacts on people & society.  It was precisely because we read Humanae Vitae that my wife, Margaret, I & became “reverts” to the Catholic Church after being away for almost 20 years.  Margaret & I were both raised Catholic & attended Catholic grammar schools, high schools, & young people’s retreats.  But by 1980, when we met in graduate school, we had essentially left the Church. . .

Cardinal Farrell & Cardinal O’Malley Pass the Buck on the Cardinal McCarrick Homosexual Predation & Pedophilia Scandal

(link repaired)

. . .here’s some world-class buck-passing in the form of a McCarrick column by Boston’s Cardinal Sean O’Malley.  The headline itself tells quite a story:

POLICY NEEDED TO ADDRESS BISHOPS’ VIOLATIONS OF THE VOWS OF CELIBACY

. . .policy needed! Well, there you go.  More concise than Cardinal Joseph Tobin’s post-McCarrick view that the bishops must “articulate standards that will assure high standards,” certainly. . .

Holy Communion by Angelo Graf von Courten (Credit: Crisis Magazine)

A Modest Proposal to End the Vocations Crisis

. . .Communion in the hand is an approved practice, but one which is only juridically “tolerated.”  No matter how antediluvian this may sound, it is the reality.  Moreover, no intelligent Catholic would maintain that Communion in the hand alone caused a decline either in devotion to the Blessed Sacrament or in vocations to the priesthood.  On the other hand, no intelligent Catholic would deny that Communion in the hand holds a principal place in the constellation of factors that have led to these declines. . .

Fatima, the Sun, the Black Banner & a Friar’s Prophecy: “We Can Bring You Down & We Will”

. . .Poland.  At the end of the second decade of the 20th century.  A young, conventual, Franciscan Friar is seated at his desk trying to organize his thoughts.  On the desk there is only a small image of Our Lady.  For some months now there has been talk of a “beautiful Lady” appearing to three little illiterate shepherds in Portugal.  All the newspapers had reported it.  They had reported the strange apparitions & the Miracle of the Sun, a prodigy previously foretold by the little shepherds. . .

Beautiful Church Interior (Credit: Chad Greiter of Unsplash via Those Catholic Men)

Millenials Don’t Want a Relevant Church, So Stop Embarrassing Us

. . .relevancy appears to be little more than a popularity contest.  The men of my generation—the infamous “millennials”—are going to see what they are going to see.  The Catholic Church should never feel compelled to be popular, relevant, or hip for them or for any other generation.  She has never existed to be cool or culturally germane, & she should really stop trying to pretend she is.  Such efforts are actually embarrassing.  The truth is, millennials need the Church to be even less popular than she is.  “Salt & light” are not always inviting.  They are not about acceptance or relevancy in a relativistic world.  What they are—what they should be—are the requisite characteristics of the Bride of Christ—the One.  Holy.  Catholic.  Apostolic Church. . .
